Download Streaming Videos using Keepvid.com

 

Keepvid.com allows you to download streaming videos from of a variety of websites, including YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook and more. The process is quick, easy and very convenient.

A video version of this process is below.

To get started, you must first make sure that Java is enabled. According to keepvid.com/help, Java is sometimes required to fetch download links.

Find the video that you want to download, copy the link – URL (Uniform Resource Locator) to your video and paste it in the field to the left of the Download button.

A list of links to your video file will appear on the bottom of the page in various sizes and formats.

Formats to select from include Video formats: MP4, FLV, 3GP, WebM and Audio Formats: M4A, MP3.

Click on the actual link for your specific format and size to simply save the video file.

“PWN” to Download Youtube Videos

This is a very cool and fast download activator for YouTube videos. PWN originates from the “own,” which is an apt name for not having to rely on a web connection to play a video in a presentation.

Deturi.com powers this quick, easy and extremely convenient way to download YouTube videos without having to copy and paste links or save videos to convert.
1. Go to YouTube and find the video you want.
2. In the URL bar type “pwn” to the URL.
3. Type inb “pwn” between www. and youtube.

4. The page is redirected to the the Deturi.com download page.
5. Select from the many download options from various sites.

6. Note: Some of these sites require Java to be installed and updated on your computer.
7. The bookmarklet option makes saving streaming videos in the basic formats very fast and simple. Save the bookmarklet to your Favorites Menu/Bar to easily download the video in the future. Select the link under Download Tools that says “Bookmarklet to directly download videos” OR a yellow bar will appear under the top menus with download options for the streaming video.

Downloading YouTube Videos For A Presentation

PowerPoint has a feature to run videos direct from YouTube. The feature works well, but it requires an internet connection, enough bandwidth, having the presentation computer online, and a number of other potential issues.

To minmize potential issues, running all videos direct from the computer and as embedded elements is a good best practice. YouTube Downloader HD is a free tool to download videos from YouTube and save to your computer. It enables you to download high quality, high definition, and full HD videos from YouTube. The software is available with an installer or as a standalone exe file.

Downloading is easy. Go to the video you wish to download on YouTube. Copy the address of the video.

Open the YouTube Downloader HD software, and paste the video’s address into the Video URL field. In the Download dropdown menu, select the type and quality of the video.

Then select the best format and size for the presentation. TLC Creative Services opts for .mp4 and the largest size (1080p or 720p).

Then click download.

Insert YouTube Video Into PowerPoint

PowerPoint 2010 added a new insert video feature that allows online YouTube videos to be added to presentations. I have not recommended this feature because it has the downside of needing to be online and also a high bandwidth connection to play the video. There are several easy ways to download and embed YouTube videos, which I would recommend to minimize playback issues.

But, the request comes up often enough on how to use it, so here is a step-by-step tutorial.

1. Find video you want to insert onto slide.

2. Click the “Share” button under the playback bar.

3. Check the “Use old embed code” box. (Uncheck the “Show suggested videos when video finishes” if you want just a black screen when playback is done.) Copy the code.

4. In PPT, go to the Insert tab, and under Media, click the carrot down on the Video button.

5. Select the “Video from Web Site” option.

6. Paste the code into the text box. Hit Insert.

7. You now have the YouTube video on your slide.

Note: As mentioned above, the computer must be connected to the internet for the video to play.

YouTube Downloader HD – also for audio files!

Videos are great in presentations (when used properly). Audio is also a great element to add to presentations (again, when used properly). YouTube is a great resource for audio as well as video – for example, search “applause sound effect” or “applause sfx” and there are hundreds of audio files that could be used in a presentation.

YouTube Downloader HD is free software that also allows any YouTube video to be downloaded as an MP3 audio.

Downloading audio files is easy. Go to the video on YouTube. Copy the URL address of the video.

Open the YouTube to MP3 software, and paste the video’s address into the Video URL field.

In the audio settings dropdown, select the quality of the sound.

Click download.

Now insert the downloaded .mp3 into PowerPoint and set the animation as needed (Note: PPT 2010 and above can embed .mp3 format).

YouTube Video In PowerPoint (part 2)

Here is my process for adding a YouTube (google, metacafe, soapbox, etc) video to a PowerPoint presentation:

1. Find the movie online and copy the URL

2. Go to www.techcrunch.com/get-youtube-movie

3. Paste in the YouTube URL

4. Follow instructions to download to your computer.
Note: the video is in .flv format, which need to be converted for use in PowerPoint

5. Go to www.media-convert.com

6. Be sure you are in the ‘Local File Conversion’ tab

7: Click the BROWSE button and find the video on your computer

8: Convert the .FLV video to a PowerPoint friendly .WMV format.
Note: there are lots of options, but I recomend
– No Video Preset
– Windows Media Video (.wmv)

9: Click OK and following instructions to convert and have file emailed you.

10: Move newly created .wmv video to same folder as presenation and use PowerPoint’s INSERT >> MOVIE FROM FILE wizard

11: Done!

YouTube Video In PowerPoint (Part 1)

So you have found the perfect video for you analogy – on Youtube. The question I get a lot, is how to play that video in a presentation.

There are a few issues that make this a bit complex. In this post I’ll overview the issues and in the next post show my process for making it all work.

Issue 1:
– YouTube (Google, Soapbox, Metacafe, and almost all other online video sites) is an online video, not on your computer.

Issue 2:
– If you download the video, it is an .flv (Flash Video), which a format PowerPoint does not support.

Issue 3:
– Nearly all online video sites automatically run a compression filter to make the file size smaller (they are storing ALL of these videos on their servers, so the smaller the file the more they can store and the less bandwidth needed to playback). Highly compressed videos mean lower playback quality.
