Ascend or Float Up?

In PPT 2003 and 2007, I made lots of animation effects with the “Ascend” and “Descend” entrance animations.

In PPT 2010, it was a near panic when these popular animations were not found. But, nothing to fear, the same animations effect have been renamed “Float Up” or “Float Down.”

Is the “Compress” Animation Gone in PPT 2010?

PPT 2003 and 2007 gave us the “compress” entrance animation, which I have used lots. In PPT 2010, it is mysteriously missing from the animation options. But is it really gone?

To get it back, here is one solution:
Create a single slide presentation in PPT 2003 or 2007 that has a single shape with the Compress animation (or download one below). Here is mine from PPT 2003:

Open the slide in PPT 2010:

Interestingly, when you select the animated shape and go to the Animation tab, it shows the Compress animation!

Use the Animation Painter to pickup the Compress animation from the sample shape and apply to any element in your presentation.

Download Compress animation slide here.

How To Move An Object Seamlessly With Multiple Motion Paths

Motion path animations are a great feature, but using them beyond the basic can be confusing. For example, here is the slide from yesterday’s timeline sample:

The animation effect was great and the design of it relied on a lot of motion paths. This is a quick step-by-step example of moving an object to two positions with motion paths.

1. The blue box is the object to move. First to area “1” and then to area “2.”

2. Moving to area “1” is easy. Select the box and add a Motion Path to the left.

3. To move to area “2” is a bit more involved. First, add a Motion Path up. Note: It is added to the existing position. During slide show the box will move to the left, then jump back to the original location and move up – not the seamless effect wanted.

4. Select the “up” motion path. Note: You must be in the Animation tab to view motion paths and select them. Then, click and drag it over so it’s green start is exactly aligned with the first motion paths red end.

5. Done. Now, the box will seamlessly move to area “1” and then up to area “2.”

Download presentation with this sample animation (17K). Note: if your browser changes downloaded file to”.zip” rename to “.pptx”.

Stopsigns on the Timeline

Timelines are a staple for presentations. But memorable, content applicable, and legible timelines are not. Here is a timeline developed for a recent client that tied in with the visual style of the presentation and emphasized the key message with animation.
[youtube src=”https://www.youtube.com/embed/CsTi7dV7now?rel=0″]

The timeline was spread across two slides to make the design (and modification) easier. In the full presentation there were several on-click animations to coordinate with the speaking points and the slide transition acted as one of the clicks to advance to the next point.

Animation Using Super Wide Panoramic Photo

Using the panoramic image from the previous post, here is a sample animation. Actually the audience sees a continuous animation, but from the designer view is a series of slides that use Slide Transitions for the animation effect.

1. Insert panoramic image (it is almost 5Xs the width of a slide)

2. Position it by using the Align tools. (1) Align left. (2) Align Middle.

3.Duplicate the slide. Right-click the image >> Format Picture >> Position (left pane) >> set Horizontal to -10.5″ (right pane)

4. Duplicate the slide and repeat process to set horizontal another 10.5″ to the left (-21″)

5. Duplicate the slide and repeat process to set horizontal another 10.5″ to the left (-31.5″)

6. Because the image is not exactly another 10.5″ wide, go to HOME tab >> ARANGE >> ALIGN >> ALIGN RIGHT

7. Select all 5 slides and set the slide transition to WIPE

8. With all 5 slides still selected adjust the slide transition – TRANSITIONS tab >> EFFECT OPTIONS >> FROM RIGHT, so the slide transitions visually act as the on-click animations.

The result is a slide show that lets you pan through image from left to right. Download this presntation here.

Loop 1st Movie While the Second Plays Too

My sample slide shows 2 movies of heart surgery in action. Both movies are set to play at the same time (July 29 post) and set to loop (July 31 post). But here the presenter wants to talk to the 1st movie, and then click to play the 2nd movie.

The first step is to adjust the animations:
1. Open the Animation Pane

2. Select the 2nd movie and change its animation to ON CLICK

– I prefer to do this on the ANIMATION tab

– But the animation start for movies can also be changed on the PLAYBACK tab

3. Select the 1st movie and TIMING (to open the PLAY VIDEO dialog)

4. The REPEAT needs to be set to UNTIL END OF SLIDE vs. Until Next Click

** PPT 2003 and 2007 the default is UNTIL NEXT CLICK, so if modifying legacy presentations this will need to be checked. PPT 2010 the default is UNTIL END OF SLIDE, so it ‘automatically’ sets up the 1st movie to continue playing while the 2nd plays.

Setup 2 Movies to Play Simultaneously

My sample slide has movies of 2 cardiograms (heart surgery movies). The 1st plays automatic and the 2nd starts after it finishes – which is the typical animation setup I have seen on hundreds of medical slides.

To make both movies play simultaneously:

1. Select the 2nd movie

2. Change AFTER PREVIOUS to WITH PREVIOUS

3. Open the Animation Pane and verify video are set in needed animation sequence

Make a Movie Play Automatically in PPT 2010

Because the default action requires the mouse to be seen during the presentation – something not allowed in any large stage production, I change the play animation on every movie. Here is my process:

1. Insert the video: INSERT tab >> VIDEO

2. Locate movie on computer

3. Select movie >> ANIMATIONS tab >> click PLAY to change from PAUSE

4. Change ON CLICK to WITH PREVIOUS

5. Open the Animation Pane and verify the movie play animation is the first in list

Design For Speed Slide

This is from a recent presentation project.
Designing For Speed Sample Slide

The slide started with 2 original images:

In photoshop I dropped out the background of each and saved as .png images with transparency.

Then each image was inserted to the slide, a simple FADE IN animation applied to the top image for the transformation.

Animation Pane is Smart Enough To Disappear

With PPT 2010 the animation has a new trick. When editing a slide the Animation Pane can be opened in its standard right-side position.

But when switching to Slide Sorter view it automatically closes.

It is a minor thing, but the animation pane is of no use in slide sorter view. In all early versions it remained open/visible just taking up screen realestate. And when you go back to editing a slide it appears open again until you close it.
