One of Our Top Clients Makes the Top of ‘What People Earn’ List!

In Los Angeles this week preparing presentations for one of our larger clients, who just this past week was listed as the top earning woman of the year!

Serious – Lori and I are working for Mattel Toys preparing presentations and this really was in the L.A. times. And her (Barbie) presentations not a list of boring bullet points!

Backstage in Las Vegas

Spent last week working in Las Vegas and the new Palazzo hotel (part of The Venetian) is highly recommended. The staging looked great with 2 high-def screens (I controlled) and a lot of smaller support screens (moving video elements) and the set lighting and PPT template color scheme changed with each presenter.

Backstage was the usual glow of computer displays.

Here are the computers I supplied for the event:
1. Primary Left Screen
2. Primary Right Screen
3. My personal production computer
4. Backup Left Screen
5. Backup Left Screen
6. Backup graphics operator personal computer

And although I don’t gamble, this one caught my attention:

It’s Like Cheating To Be a Graphic Designer These Days

I am working on a simple project this past week, #10 envelope return address layout, for a company. I have the logo, important information (address, phone numbers, web address, etc.) and begin developing a series of layouts for the client to review and indicate what design direction they like. After my 4th layout I am beginning to really have to think to come up with alternative layouts, then my best idea comes out – go to Live Search or Google and do an image search for ‘envelop design’ It’s like cheating! Instantly I have 1,000’s of ideas in front of me (actually 3,340,000 in 0.06 seconds).

Instant creativity. Instant design diversity. Instantly I realize the internet has changed the world of design and it is a communal thing now. And instantly I realize that all the new designers are cheating – they are not spending $500 per stock photo, not spending hours tweaking designs to come up with something new for their client (although this is the most valuable education a designer can get) and not even having to spend real money on computers (only the software has stayed costly, like the $1,700 I just gave to Adobe for CS4). Maybe it’s not so much cheating as it is not fair… Oh well, onto the next project, at least I gained lots of experience along the way that clients seem to like 🙂

MVP Summit 09 PPT MVPs

Fellow PowerPoint MVP Geetesh Gajaj posted this great group shot of the PowerPoint MVPs and a number of the MS Office and PowerPoint developers. It has a fun interactive rollover feature that tells you who each person is. It is on flickr here.

I am over on the far left.

Microsoft MVP Summit (1)

Heading up to Seattle today for the Microsoft MVP Summit. One of the big honors of being a Microsoft MVP is being a guest on the Redmond campus and getting some indepth time with the PowerPoint product development team.

Looking forward to spending time with the other PowerPoint MVPs, the PowerPoint development team, and hearing from the Microsoft executive team.

The 2009 Christmas Lights

Christmas is a big deal around our house – full of family events, traditions and lots of decorating!

But this is the weekend the holiday lights come down (there’s no snow in Southern California, so no need to wait until March)… 🙁
